Life

Brian P. Herrington has recently been awarded a prestigious First Music Award, which includes a commission to write an orchestral work, with a premiere in New York City’s Carnegie Hall in 2003. In April 2002, his organ work "Silsbee Groves" will be premiered in London’s Royal Festival Hall. Also in 2002, the BBC Singers will perform "Oculus non vidit," which the composer wrote for the ensemble. Last year, Herrington was commissioned by the Symphony Orchestra of the Royal Academy of Music.

Herrington was born in East Texas in 1976. In 1998, he attended the University of Louisville, Kentucky, where he studied with Grawemeyer Award-winning composer and visiting professor Simon Bainbridge. After graduating from the University of Louisville in 2000 with a Masters Degree in Composition, Herrington returned to East Texas, where he began a concentrated study of folk musis forms there, developing new analytical techniques for folk music, and studying the varieties of instrumental and vocal techniques of that music. In 2001, Herrington began studies at the Royal Academy of Music, London, and resumed studies with Bainbridge. Herrington is supported at the Academy by an Overseas Research Scholarship, and hopes to recieve his PhD in 2004.

Herrington is a member of the American Music Center, and the UK-based Society for the Promotion of New Music.
