Biography

Gerard Hengeveld werd op 7 december 1910 in Kampen geboren. Hij overleed op 28 oktober 2001 in Bergen (NH).

Muzikale opleiding: Hij studeerde aan het Amsterdams Conservatorium piano bij Ulfert Schults en compositie bij Sem Dresden. In 1932 ontving hij de Prix d’excellence voor piano. Hij voltooide zijn pianostudie bij Prof. Carl Friedberg in Zwitserland.

Werkzaamheden: Hij was vele jaren werkzaam als concertpianist. Van 1945 tot 1976 was hij hoofdleraar piano aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag.

Composities: Hij componeerde zeer veel ten behoeve van het piano-onderwijs, maar ook een vioolsonate, een cellosonate, liederen en een pianoconcert.

Prijzen: Zijn Pianoconcert werd bekroond met de Visser Neerlandia-prijs. In 1975 werd hij benoemd tot Ridder in de Orde van Oranje Nassau.

Compact discs: Opnamen van Gerard Hengeveld, die op een Fazioli-concertvleugel zijn composities speelt: Partita rhythmique, Suite pour piano 'à la manière de monsieur Erik Satie’, 15 Driestemmige polyfone oefeningen en Thème dans le style de six compositeurs connus (A&A Records 71290). Op de cd Plein zeven werden twee delen uit de Sonate voor viool en piano vastgelegd in een uitvoering van Vera Beths en Stanley Hoogland (KCB 94-1). Op de cd "Onbekend maakt onbemind? 2" werd de Kleine ouverture uit Menuet en kleine ouverture vastgelegd (Q Disc 97022).

Gerard Hengeveld was born on December 7, 1910 in Kampen. He died on October 28, 2001 in Bergen.

Musical education: He studied piano with Ulfert Schults and composition with Sem Dresden at the Conservatory of Music in Amsterdam where he received the Prix d’excellence in 1932. He finished his studies with Carl Friedberg in Switzerland.

Musical activities: For many years he gave concerts with European orchestras and in recitals. From 1945 to 1976 he was senior teacher for piano at The Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague.

Compositions: He composed numerous pieces for piano for educational purposes but also a Piano concerto, Sonatas for violin and for violoncello and Liederen (Songs).

Prizes: For his Pianoconcerto he was awarded the Visser Neerlandia-Prize.
