Biography
- While in Germany, studied with Paul Hindemith, was awarded the Mendelssohn Prize for Composition (1933)
- Immigrated to the US (1935), settling in Detroit
- Inducted into the U.S. Army (1943), became assistant bandmaster of the 445th Army Service Forces Band, writing more than 100 arrangements
- Earned masters’ degree at Cornell University, studying musicology with Donald Grout
- Distinguished faculty member at Indiana University (1946-81)
- Other awards included the Fine Arts Composition Award, two Fromm Foundation awards, a Guggenheim Fellowship
- Wrote orchestral, chamber, and solo music, performed widely by major orchestras and professional individuals
- Was a masterteacher of free counterpoint
