Life

While in Germany, studied with Paul Hindemith, was awarded the Mendelssohn Prize for Composition (1933)
Immigrated to the US (1935), settling in Detroit
Inducted into the U.S. Army (1943), became assistant bandmaster of the 445th Army Service Forces Band, writing more than 100 arrangements
Earned masters’ degree at Cornell University, studying musicology with Donald Grout
Distinguished faculty member at Indiana University (1946-81)
Other awards included the Fine Arts Composition Award, two Fromm Foundation awards, a Guggenheim Fellowship
Wrote orchestral, chamber, and solo music, performed widely by major orchestras and professional individuals
Was a masterteacher of free counterpoint
