Biography

Hawkins studied piano on the cons. of Montreal with Lubka Kolessa, and there he won the Premier Prix in piano 1967. He recieved his bachelor degree in music at McGill University the same year, and his concert diploma in 1968. In 1969 he attended the Pierre Boulez Conducting Course in Basel, along with Serge Garant and Bruce Mather. His Eight Movements for flute and clarinet won first prize at a composition competition at the University of Alberta 1967. His biggest influences are Pierre Boulez, Elliot Carter, George Crumb and György Ligeti.
