Biography
Born in rural Norway, came early in contact with the local folk music.
Education as a teacher. Studied music at the conservatory in Leipzig, Germany
and at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin. Debut in Bergen, Norway in 1878.
Settled in Oslo, Norway in 1880 as an organist and conductor. For his romances
he used texts by Per Sivle, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and Knut Hamsun. Worked also
as a music critic for several newspapers.
