Music

His music is ethereal and atmospheric, influenced by Debussy. These works are: The White Peacock, The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan, Baccanale (tone poems) and Poem for Flute and Orchestra.

Life

American composer whose life straddled the 19th & 20th century. He was "coming into his own" and being recognized when he prematurely died in 1920 at the age of 36. He was forced to teach at the Hackley School near Tarrytown, New York, along the Hudson River for most of his life in order to support himself. He probably detested this situation because it gave him less time to compose and he had to consume too much energy in teaching instead of composing. He died of a lung infection following a bout of influenza.
