Life
Lucien Goethals is a Flemish composer born at Gent (Belgium) the 26 june 1931. From 1933 on, his family was in Buenos Aires (Argentina), and it was there that he began his musical studies. On his return to Belgium in 1947, he continued his musical education at the Ghent Royal Conservatory, wher he obtained certificates in the organ, piano, music history, harmony, counterpoint, fugue and composition. After leaving the concervatory he studied composition and orchestration with Norbert Rosseau and new musical techniques with G. Michael Koenig (Germany).
In 1962 he realized his first electroacoustical composition. Since the creation in 1963 of the IPEM (Institute of Psychoacoustics and Electronic Music) at the University Ghent he was producer (1963–1970) and artistic director (1970–1987). Professor of musical analysis at the Royal Conservatory in Ghent (1970–1991). He has garnered several awards for composition (national and international) the "Tri-anual Cultural prize" of the city of Ghent (1981) and in 1999 the "Visser-Neerlandia Prize",‘s-Gravenshage (Netherlands). He wrote until today more than 140 compositions. Compositions for large orchestra, chamber orchestra, chamber music, voal music, music for solo instruments, compositions for acoustical istruments with electroacoustical music and pure elactroacoustical compositions.
