- Philip Glass gets commission from NYC Opera
[posted 30 September 2008]The New York City Opera has commissioned Philip Glass to write an opera about the last months of the life of Walt Disney. The opera will open the City Opera's 2012–2013 season, and will honor the 75th birthday of Philip Glass.
The name of the opera is "The Perfect American," and is based on a recent novel by the American-born writer Peter Stephan Jungk. In the book, a fictional Austrian cartoonist who worked for Disney in the 1940s and 1950s recounts the story of the legendary founder of the Walt Disney Company.
The NYC Opera will undergo a renovation in the coming season, but in the
2009–2010 season, it will present another Glass opera: "Einstein on the Beach". This work was first staged in New York in 1992 and will be the company's first production at the refurbished theater.[Source: www.newsday.com]
