Editorial Review:
Album Description:
This program is devoted to original 20th-century works for guitar by composers from Argentina and Uruguay, but unlike much Latin American repertoire it is not simply a gentrified version of local folk music. While affected by the folk influence, these composers were capable of producing music unmistakably their own, regardless of geography.
Alberto Ginastera is the most famous Argentinian composer of his generation. Born in Uruguay, Carlos Pedrell lived many years in Argentina, and then in Paris where he was admired as a man of wide culture. Gilardo Gilardi was famous in Argentina prior to Ginastera. Guido Santorsola combines the 12-tone technique with neo-baroque form.
