Life
Giovanni Gabrieli is the nephew of composer Andrea Gabrieli.
The year of his death is uncertain — his death certificate says 1612, his tombstone says 1613. His birth date is unrecorded, but his death certificate says he was 58, while his tombstone claims he died at the tender age of 56.

- Organist and principal composer at St. Mark’s Basilica (Venice) from 1585–1612.
- Wrote many church motets in the "cori spezzati" style (using more than one choir at a time).
- Taught Heinrich Schütz (another important composer) and many other composers during his lifetime.
- Most famous work (the one with those infamous dynamics) is the Sonata pian e forte.
