Life

Bruno Gabirro was a student at the Academia de Amadores de Música in Lisbon, where he completed the complementary course in violin with the teacher Gareguine Arouthounian’s class and where he studied analysis and composition with teacher Eurico Carrapatoso. He also studied viola with teacher Barbara Friedhoff, and had violin masterclasses with teachers Vladimir Ovchareck and Richard Gwilt.

In 2002 he was accepted at the Escola Superior de Música in Lisbon for the degree in Composition, which he finished in 2006. There he studied Composition with teachers Luís Tinoco, António Pinho Vargas, Christopher Bochmann and João Madureira; he attended orchestration, analysis and composition classes with teachers Roberto Perez and Sérgio Azevedo. He was also part of the violas in the school’s orchestra.

Bruno Gabirro participated on the first edition of the Condeixa-a-Nova Contemporary Music Meeting in 2003 and was also present at the Musica Viva Festival courses in Coimbra. In this same year and in the two following years, he was one of the selected composers for the first three editions of the Gulbenkian Workshop for Young National Composers; his works got to be performed by the Gulbenkian Orchestra. He has been taking part of the Gulbenkian Composition Seminars with Emmanuel Nunes since 2003.

In 2004, Bruno Gabirro received an honorable mention on the ESMAE/ Casa da Música Composition Prize. In 2006 he was selected for the “Ópera em Criação” Contest, and worked together with writer Fernando Dacosta in creating the chamber opera Carta do Achamento, premiered at the Teatro Municipal de São Luiz. From April to July he was a resident composer at the Miso Music Portugal’s Electroacoustic Studio (LEC) in result of the Electroacoustic Studio Residencies programme promoted by this organization. Later, in September 2006, he begins a composition master degree at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he continued his studies.
