Life
Harry Freedman came to Canada at the age of three. He was a late starter in music, at 18 years he started studying clarinet after hearing Benny Goodmans band. But his teacher turned his head around, and in 1945 he went to the Royal Cons. of Music in Toronto. There he studied composition with John Weinzweig, and oboe with Perry Bauman. Then Ernest Macmillan, conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, engaged Freedman to play english Horn in the orchestra. Freedman remained with the orchestra for 25 years. During the summer of 1950 he studied at Tanglewood with Messiaen. Freedman was active as a teacher and composer in Canada.
