Life

British composer Benjamin Frankel is known notably for eight symphonies (1958–1971) in which he opened his Shostakovich-Bartók style to serialism. He scraped together an education in the public library in Germany in 1922 and as a jazz player, and earned his living from the early 1930’s onwards as an orchestrator and film composer.

His other works include a violin concerto (1951) and five quartets.
