Biography
Russian composer. A conductor at theaters in Moscow, he was the first Russian opera composer. His works, strongly Italian in style, are forgotten today but were very succesful in their time. Though they were nationalistic in subjet, their music was conventional, and it was not until a half-century later that Russia produced its own style in opera.
