Biography
Juan Esquivel was born and educated in Ciudad Rodrigo, Spain. His primary teacher was Juan Navarro (ca. 1530-80), but his style shows influence of Morales and Guerrero. Esquivel served as maestro de capilla in the Spanish cities of Oviedo and Calahorra before returning to Ciudad Rodrigo to serve that cathedral. There is evidence that the prestigious cathedral of Burgos sought his services, but he never auditioned for the position. He was one of the most published Spanish composers of the early 17th century. His music reveals a preference for experimentation with non-cadential chromaticism and unconventional voice leading.
