Life

Paul Max Edlin studied composition and trumpet at the Royal College of Music and took his doctorate at Sussex University. His works have been performed both nationally and abroad by leading artists such as Evelyn Glennie, John Wallace, Nicholas Daniel, Rolf Hind, David Campbell, the Bingham Quartet and the Britten Sinfonia, and he is the recipient of national and international awards.

Edlin’s works range from instrumental to orchestral and to opera. The RCM Opera School under James Lockhart premiere his opera The Fisherman to wide critical acclaim in a production for the London International Opera Festival. Opera Magazine called Edlin “our latest operatic prodigy”.

Edlin’s music has been recorded, broadcast on radio and television, both in the UK and abroad. His recent orchestral work Three Old Gramophones was premiered in March by the Southbank Sinfonia. He is currently working on a song cycle for Howard Wong for performances in Belgium in 2005. He is also composing a new opera, a setting of Ted Hughes’ translation of Federico Garcia Lorca’s great play Blood Wedding.

Paul Max Edlin is Reader in Music at Canterbury Christ Church University where he teaches composition, and directs the Masters Ensemble. He is a founding member of the artistic committee of the contemporary music festival Sounds New and is Artistic Director of the Deal Festival.
