Music

Among his works are the operas "La Marchande des Modes" (1787) and "Die Königen de Schwarzen Inseln" (1801), the melodrama "Pyramus und Thisbe" (1794), symphonies, piano concertos, sonatas and variations for piano and lieder. It is remarkable that much of his music was once mistakingly ascribed to Mozart.

Newly published music of Eberl (Ten variations on the Romance Zu Steffen sprach im Traume) by Christopher Hogwood are published by Edition HH.

Biography

Anton Eberl was a friend of Mozart and he was probably also his pupil. As a pianist he toured Germany, accompanied by Mozart’s widow. From 1796 till 1800 he was Kapellmeister in St. Petersburg, Russia.

See "The Piano Works of Anton Eberl", a doctoral work by A. Duane White, University of Wisconsin 1971, for all the biographical info.
