Ian Crutchley was born in 1965 in Toronto, Canada. He was an undergraduate at Douglas College and at The University of British Columbia. Between 1990 and 1993 he completed a Master of Music degree in composition with Keith Hamel and Steve Chatman as his main teachers. During this period Ian Crutchley organized concerts of his own music, won numerous awards and was commissioned by local new music ensembles in Vancouver, Canada. From 1993 to 1998 he completed doctoral studies in York, England under the supervision of Richard Orton and Nicola LeFanu. His final doctoral work was the hour long Cro for solo piano, written at the request of pianist Marc Couroux. Since July 2000 he has been an assistant professor at The University of Lethbridge.
