Life
Johannes Crüger was an influential music theorist. His main contribution to German music was the revitalization of the Protestant chorale.
He studied in Reegnsburg with Paul Homberger, who may have been a pupil of Giovanni Gabrieli. Afters stays in Austria, Hungary, Moravia, Bohemia and Saxony, he ended up in Berlin. There Crüger studied theology, and became a music tutor. From 1619 he started publishing music. On 23 June 1602 he became Kantor at the St.-Nicolai-Kirche in Berlin, a position he held until his death 40 years later.
