Life
Creston was one of USA’s greatest composers. He studied piano and organ with Giuseppe Randegger, and was selftaught in composition. In 1938 and 1939 he was awarded Guggenheim fellowships. In 1941 his first symphony gave him the New York Music Critics Annual Award. That was his real breakthrough in the business. In 1943 he recieved $ 1000 award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1956 he was elected president of the National Association for American Conductors and Composers. After 1959 Creston mainly lived as a composer. From 1960-1980 he was invited to be guest composer for many colleges and orchestras in the USA. He died in 1985, after a year’s battle with cancer.
