Compositions include: Symphony no. 1 (relating to the AIDS epidemic; an angry and commemorative piece honoring the victims of AIDS, many of whom were the composer’s friends) recorded by Daniel Barenboim & the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on Erato and by Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra on RCA; The Ghosts of Versailles, an opera; Concerto for Piano and Orchestra; Elegy; Tournaments & Fantasia on an Ostinato - all recorded on 1 CD by Leonard Slatkin & the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (RCA); Poem in October, Oboe Concerto & 3 Irish Folk Song Settings-all recorded on an RCA CD; Creations (1984), To Music(1995), Voyage for Flute and String Orchestra(1983), Campane Di Ravello, a celebration piece for George Solti(1987), Elegy for Orchestra(1965), Promenade Overture (1981) all recorded on a Telarc CD; and music for the film "The Red Violin" with Joshua Bell as violinist. Other compositions include: A Dylan Thomas Trilogy; and some newer works as Vocalise for Soprano, Electronics and Orchestra, written for Sylvia McNair and Tamborine Man: Seven Poems of Bob Dylan.
Biography
Important American composer; contemporary of John Adams, Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Son of the famous concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.
