When he was young, he came with his parents to Paris. There he studied at the Conservatoire under Reicha, Lays and Pelegrini.
From 1832 to 1839 he tried to live as an opera composer in Naples and then returned to Paris to live as a writer about music. For a short period he was the leader of a branch of the Conservatoire in Lille. Finally, he became custodian of the numismatic gallery of the National Library in Paris.
He wrote several theoretical works and also was a music critic.
