Music

Julian Cochran is an English / Australian composer and virtuoso pianist who mastered numerous musical genres. The piano works of Cochran receive regular international performances in the great concert halls of Europe.

The majority of Cochrnan’s works are exclusively for the solo piano, the most notable examples being his three Piano Sonatas, eight Preludes, five Romananian Dances and five Mazurkas. His compositions are technically demanding but emphasize rhythmic invention, structural integrity and expressive depth. Cochran made major innovations to the piano repertoire including the mastery of the scale consisting of alternating tones and semi-tones, independently invented by Cochran while playing the guitar which he named the Chain Scale (and later the scale of alternating semi-tones and tone-and-a-halves).

Life

Julian Cochran moved from England to Australia in 1974. He was awarded a scholarship to the Elder Conservatorium of Adelaide at the age of 14 however left the conservatorium two years later to teach himself to play other instruments and at this time started to experiment with multi-track tape recordings, producing his English Folk Dance. Returning to piano repertoire Cochran came to the view that composing is a more valuable endeavour than recording owing to the future interpretation and performance with endless new instruments adding great worth and Cochran thus began to concentrate increasingly on composing piano solo repertoire.
