Life

Biao Chen was born in 1971 in the province of Zhejiang, south-east of china. At the age of 14 he entered the school of art and teaching in Hangzhou. Simultaneously he studies various instruments, calligraphy, chinese painting. From 1993 to 1998 he studies at the conservatory of Shanghai with Zhao Xiao-Sheng (composition), Yang li-qing (orchestration), Chen Ming-zhi (fugue). At the same time he starts to write compositions for Radio Shanghai and Radio International Shanghai, television, movie and dance. From 2000 to 2004 he studies composition in the class of Eric Gaudibert at the Conservatory of Geneva, in 2003-2004 he takes part in the masterclasses with Klaus Huber in Lugano. Since September 2004, he lives in Paris where he met the great masters of our time as Henri Dutilleux or Christoph Eschenbach.

Since the première of his work «Ch´an (Suite)» took place at the Radio DRS2 in January 2002 in Bern, the music of Biao Chen gained a considerable public audience. In 2002 he received an Honorary Award (the highest award given) of the Accademia Costantiniana Arti e Scienze in Rome for the composition «string quartet No. 1 [Yun]». In 2004 Biao Chen won the first prize and the public prize of the 5th international competition of the Henri Dutilleux Prize for Les franges du rêve Ib and the first prize from the Academie de Lutece at the Grand Concours International 2004 (music section), for his «Si l’âme, c’était ce ciel...[Yun2]». He was also winner of the Artistic Award of the Patino Foundation and Geneva City, for a stay in the Cité international des Arts (2004-2005) in Paris.

Among his works, the most important : the suite Ch´an I, II & III; the series of Yun: sting quartet n° 1 [Yun], Si l´âme, c´était ce ciel ...[Yun2] , Concerto for piano et orchestra [Yun3]; the series of Mei Yu, and the série of les franges du rêve .

Recently Biao Chen is composer in residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris. His scores publish by the Alphonse Leduc Editions in Paris.
