Music

(contribution by Michael Dorner<mdornersunmail.lrz-muenchen.de>)

Operas: La Falce (Milano 1875); Elda (Torino 1880); Dejanice (Milano 1883); Edmea (Milano 1886); Loreley (2nd version of Elda, Torino 1890); La Wally (Milano 1893). Also symphonic pieces as ouvertures and poems (Ero e Leandro), songs and chamber music. Except for Loreley and La Wally his operas were quite unsuccessful because of the terrible librettos. His style is based on the Italian tradition of Verdi and Ponchielli, but heavily influenced both by German Romantic Opera (Wagner, Weber) and French Lyric Opera (Massenet). Strong enemy against the verismo.
