Life
Richard Campbell was born in Hillbrow, South Africa in 1985. He moved to his current hometown of Port Elizabeth, and began his music studies at age 9 when he took up piano lessons. In high school, he abandoned the piano in favour of the euphonium. With this instrument, he joined the various school ensembles and obtained his music service colours and a Grade 8 performance certificate through the Trinity Guildhall examination board.
After spending four months in the USA, he returned to South Africa to study music at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth. During his studies, he became involved in musical theatre as an orchestrator. He also began to compose his own works for various ensembles, and by the end of his studies, he had churned out numerous orchestrations and compositions.
Richard currently performs with the Mandela Bay Symhonic Wind Orchestra, and writes and orchestrates regularly for this group. He also works as a brass teacher and a church organist. He has set his sights on a career as a film composer, following the leagues of icons such as Williams, Horner and Goldsmith.
