News for Cage

Music

John Cage bacame interested in Zen, which influenced his decision to engage in chance music. He used such methods for chance as rolling dice, chinses I Ching, and other procedures to ensure a no ego composition. Also, Cage invented the prepared piano, which involves manipulation of the strigs of a piano with screws, nuts, bolts, rubber bands, etc. and sounds like a Gamelan percussion ensemble. (contributed by Misty Boswell <mboswell(at)mail.coos.or.us>)

Cage’s “Music for Marcel Duchamp” was originally written for the Duchamp part of Hans Richter’s film “Dreams that money can buy”.
