Music

Howard Buss is recognized nationally and internationally as an outstanding composer of contemporary classical music. His compositions have received critical acclaim and have been performed in more than 35 countries. His works are frequently featured in music conventions and festivals around the world and on radio and television. They have been performed by faculty musicians from major universities as well as current and former members of prestigious organizations such as The Minnesota Orchestra, Buffa lo Philharmonic, Florida Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic, Vancouver Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Indianapolis Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Utah Symphony. In 1982 a copy of his patriotic composition Fanfares was included in the Presidential Collection of Ronald Reagan. Buss’s more than 70 published works include instrumental solos, compositions for voice, orchestra, band, and chamber music. They are fast becoming part of the standard repertoire in concert halls.

The legendary Leon Russianoff described Dr. Buss’s style as "imaginative, sincere, rewarding to both performers and audiences, and without the gimmickry which is so prevalent in contemporary music today". Upon hearing his music critics have written: "By far the night’s most memorable piece" - The Los Angeles Times, "This is truly one of the finest works in our idiom" - Robert McCormick in the Florida Percussive News, and "The evening’s highlight" - The Maine Sunday Telegram.

Buss has received numerous awards including ASCAP Awards for 15 consecutive years, The Erik Satie Award (1991), The Florida Composer of the Year Award (1987), an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, and the 1991 "Distinguished Music Alumnus Award" from West Chester University. His commissioned works include original compositions as well as arrangements. In 1990 he received two commissions, representing the states of Florida and North Carolina, to compose works for the nation-wide 50th Anniversary of the American Music Center. His works are frequently selected to be included and analyzed in doctoral dissertations, lectures, professional music journals, and music literature bibliographies and a number of his compositions have been commercially recorded.

Howard Buss received his B.A. in Performance from West Chester University in Pennsylvania, M.M. in Performance and M.M. in Composition from Michigan State University, and D.M.A. in Composition from the University of Illinois. He is founder and editor of Brixton Publications (ASCAP) and Buss Publications (BMI) which publish contemporary American concert music.
