- $225,000 Charles Ives Living awarded to George Tsontakis
[posted 12 December 2006]The fourth recipient of the Charles Ives Living, a three-year, $225,000 grant from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, is George Tsontakis.
Jury chairman William Bolcom, also a well-known composer, said, "There are a slew of awards for young composers. There aren't nearly enough for composers who have gained a solid reputation, who are in mid-career and sorely in need of more time to compose ... For someone like George Tsontakis, the Charles Ives Living affords precious and well-deserved time to create."
Composers that won the Ives living previously are Stephen Hartke (2004), Chen Yi (2001) and Martin Bresnick (1998).

- National Medal of Arts 2006 for Bolcom
[posted 9 November 2006]Michigan composer William Bolcom has won the highest honor for artistic excellence in the USA.
Together with the Interlochen Center for the Arts in northern Michigan, Bolcom will receive the 2006 National Medal of Arts at the White House today. The medals for Bolcom and Interlochen president Jeffrey Kimpton will be awarded by President George W. Bush in the Oval Office in Washington.

- Three Grammys for William Bolcom
[posted 16 February 2006]No less than three Grammys, for Best Classical Album, Best Classical Contemporary Composition and Best Choral Performance, were won by William Bolcom's “Songs of Innocence and of Experience”. The composition, a cantata, took him 25 years to write. It is based on poems by Willian Blake. The piece was recorded in April 2004, and released by Naxos.
