Life

She studied piano with her mother and solfeggio with Agustín Solórzano. Later she studied with María Zimmerman and Antonio Gianoli at the National Conservatory of Music in San Salvador. She furthered her musical knowledge with Agustín Roig and Vicente de Arrillaga. Founder of the asocíation de Amigos del Arte. President of the Research Committee on National Folklore and Native Art of the Minstry of Public Education.


She was born in San Salvador on February 27th,1890, and died in the same city on June 4th, 1978. She’s considered the first researcher of the salvadorenian folklore and she conducted several musical studies with the masters Agustín Solórzano, Juan Aberle, Vicente de Arrillaga, Alfredo Villalba and Antonio Yianilli. Between 1926 and 1938, she performed piano concerts in the main conservatories and art centres of America and Europe. Furthermore, she represented the country in several americanist and folklore congresses.

She was a member of the Ateneo El Salvador, the Academia Salvadoreña de la Historia,the Unión de Mujeres de las Americanas and was elected Mujer de las Americas (New York, 1962).

She wrote 14 musical pieces and 15 folklore pieces about local themes. Only a few of her works were published. Among them, Canto al sol, Ofrenda de la elegida, Los tecomatillos, Nahualismo, El teocalli (ballet), Procesión hierática, Danza del incienso, El cancionero de la jarra verde and her important Cuzcatlán Típico stand out.
