Life

Together with Grieg and Kjerulf, Agathe Backer Grøndahl was Norway’s most famous composer of romances. From 1857 she studied with Otto Winter Hjelm. From 1865 studies in Berlin, Germany followed, where she had great success with Beethoven’s 5th Piano concerto. She moved to Oslo in 1867, and studied in Germany with Franz Liszt in 1873. She was a close friend of Edvard Grieg her whole life. Unfortunately she had to stop playing at concerts after loosing her hearing.
