Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - There would be no Rossini without Cimarosa
A one-act farce based on the inflated personalities of stock opera talent from the 18th century, this piece is Cimarosa during his prime. In this production, his sense of melody and counterpoint has evolved beyond Paisiello and other Neapolitan composers of the time, pointing directly towards the future (specifically Rossini) in its effortlessness and beauty.

While it seems that most of the attention the booklet essay pays to goes towards the central quartetto, I found the truly astonishing ... Read More

Music

He wrote nine lyrical operas and one of them is "L’Ajo nell’imbarazzo" that was transmitted in R.A.I., under the direction of the same Autor and, "La Coppa di Cipro" that has been produced on stage, in Italy, for forty three times during the period going from the 54th to the 59th, with great success of public and critic.

The other operas are: "Silvia" - "Il dono del Sole" - "Fiamme Barbariche" - "Mitsuoko" - "L’Avvoltoio"- "La Boccaccesca" (from the novel of Decameron) and "Frate Sole", mystic opera in a prologue, three acts and seven pictures. This is really a great work.

Maestro Angelo has composed four ballets: "Il Trenino della neve", "I denari incantati", "Leggenda Satanica" and "Scandalo in Paese "; then two symphonies, a Mass for two masculine voices and a lot of cinematografic music for famous films like "Ombre Rosse".

Life

Maestro Gioacchino Angelo, composer and conductor, was born in Palermo in 1899 and died in Ostia Lido - Rome - (where there is a Park that has taken his name) in 1971. He studied violin with Prof. Franco Tufari and composition with Maestro Felice Longo and Maestro Francesco Cilèa at the Conservatory "V. Bellini" in Palermo.

When he was twenty, Pietro Mascagni had him as his collaborator at "Massimo" in the same city; then in Rome, Umberto Giordano asked him to orchestrate music for the film "Fedora" and music for the film "Una notte dopo l’Opera" (A night after the Opera).

Maestro Angelo was a conductor and a composer. He conducted many symphonic concerts, also in R.A.I. and has composed much music, part of it recorded on "Cetra" and "Voce del Padrone".
