Biography

Altenburg is well known for his 1770 Essay on an Introduction to the Heroic and Musical Trumpeters’ and Kettledrummers’ Art — a book on the history of the trumpet and method of trumpet playing from biblical times until his own. He became a member of the trumpeters’ guild after a long apprenticeship as court trumpeter.
