Life

Aaron Alon (b. 1981) holds a BA in music from the University of Chicago (2003) and an MM in composition from the Cleveland Institute of Music (2005). He is currently pursuing a DMA in composition at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. His past teachers include Karim Al-Zand, Easley Blackwood, Anthony Brandt, Margaret Brouwer, Shih-Hui Chen, Jean Milew, Marta Ptaszynska, and Orianna Webb.

Alon has received numerous national and international awards, including those from the National Association of Composers; the National Federation of Music Clubs; the Society of Composers, Inc.; ASCAP; the Renée B. Fisher Composer Awards; Mu Phi Epsilon; the Tampa Bay Composers’ Forum; and Composers in Red Sneakers. His works have been performed throughout the US, including Chicago, LA, Houston, Cleveland, San Antonio, and Greensboro, as well as in China, Brazil, and Slovakia. His art song, “Spring and Fall,” was included on a CD released by the National Association of Composers, and his solo oboe piece, “Córdoba,” is due to be released later this year by noted oboist Ian Davidson.

Alon is a member of ASCAP and a past chapter president of Mu Phi Epsilon. Outside of classical composition, Alon has an interest in composing for film and musical theatre. Alon is also highly active as a teacher and currently teaches for Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, the American Festival for the Arts, the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program, as well as in Houston-area music schools. His interest in working with young people has also led him to write piano pieces for young pianists and a ballet based upon the original Peter Pan story. Recent projects include a solo piano piece commissioned by the Renée B. Fisher Foundation and a setting of Wilfred Owen’s “Dulce et Decorum Est” for baritone and string quartet, commissioned by Colm Estridge.
