(Modern research has cast much doubt on the popular legend that he died while being crushed by a bookshelf after reaching for the Talmud).

Main biography: Ronald Smith, "Alkan: Who Was Alkan" (Kahn & Averill, London, 1976 & 1987), now reprinted as one volume called "Alkan: The Man, the Music (publ. April 2000).
