Music

Acclaimed as one of the greatest of American march writers, particularly noted for his circus marches. Famous marches include Colossus of Columbia, Memphis the Majestic, Belford’s Carnival, Storming of El Caney Galop, The Southerner, Burr’s Triumphal.

Biography

Virtuoso on the euphonium; joined the circus band of Belford’s Carnival at the age of 18. At 20, became arranger and euphonium soloist with Barnum & Bailey Circus Band under the noted circus bandmaster Carl Clair. Toured Europe with the circus from 1897-1902, writing many of his famous marches. Joined a vaudeville act with his two brothers and a friend, the Exposition Four. The quartet toured the country playing as a brass quartet and also singing and acting. Stricken with tuberculosis and died at the age of 38 in 1915. Named to the Windjammer Circus Music Hall of Fame.
