Life

Violinist, conductor, administrator & Composer Dr. Karl Ahrendt, Director of the Ohio University School of Music, Athens, Ohio 1950-1967, was a recognized as an accomplished composer, violinist and conductor.

Among his 60 or more compositions are works for orchestra, band, solo instruments with piano accompaniment and chorus. During his distinguished career, Dr. Ahrendt won numerous awards, including the Philadelphia Arts Alliance Award for Composition (1944), The University of Illinois Contemporary Festival Competition (1950), the First Prize, Ohio Music Teachers Association (1972), and the Baker Award at Ohio University (1969). He is listed in the International Who’s Who in Music. He was also a resident at the MacDowell Colony nine times during the 1950 and 1960s.

Dr. Karl Ahrendt’s manuscripts are archived in the OU School of Music Library (courtesy of Dr. Richard D. Wetzel) along with a revised catalog/thematic index of his works and a collection of performances of his works on CDs (courtesy of Anastasios Polis {A Thesis for a Masters degree in Music History and Literature}).

A duplicate set of CDs are also available for listening requests on WOUB Public Radio Station. They operate six transmitters that broadcast throughout southeastern and east central Ohio. Tune in to:
