Life

Olof Åhlström (1756–1835) was a composer, organist, music publisher and government official. From 1776 till 1792 he was organist at Maria Magdalena and Jacob’s churches in Stockholm.

Åhlström had a strong influence on home music-playing in Sweden and Finland through the publishing-house that he founded in 1783. He composed more than 200 company songs and hundreds of other songs. He also published a hymn book in 1832. Together with A.A. Afzelius he published the first collection of domestic instrumental folk music. His publication of Carl Michael Bellman’s “Fredman’s Epistles” (1790) and “Fredman’s Songs” (1791), for which he arranged the music for piano, was epoch-making. He also composed piano music and music-dramatic works.
