Studied at Oxford and also in Berlin and Vienna. Was known as a writer of incidental music for plays and films. His most famous composition, the so-called Warsaw Concerto, was written for the film Dangerous Moonlight (1941) became very poular. He did not hold it in high regard.

Addinsell scored the music for the Alistair Sim version of "A Christmas Carol", often considered the best adaptation of the Dickens story.
